Wrapping Up 2024

2024 signified Kenwa Karate of Sitka’s 40th year teaching Shito-Ryu karate.
In summer, eight students took a special one-month bo staff class taught by Liam Senpai. Other special events included our annual meeting & potluck and a sparring seminar.
We had a visit by Darin Yee Sensei, President of the Uechi-Ryu style of karate in August. Sitkan Duane Swanson, who studies Uechi-Ryu, planned for the visit.
In September, we welcomed Jade as an assistant instructor for Little Dragons. Jade is a wonderful addition to our staff. She helps teach beginning karate skills to kids in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade.
Our founder, Michael Taylor Sensei visited in November. He stayed in town for a week providing special instruction and private lessons to Sitka students and staff. Many students attended Taylor’s special bunkai seminar or saw him during regularly scheduled classes. It was so great to catch up with him in person!
Numerous students earned new belts this year, along with all current staff members. Jade received her 6th kyu purple belt in March. Rianna Senpai was awarded her black belt in the spring. Finally, during Taylor’s visit Laurinda Marcello Sensei earned her Sandan and Liam Senpai was awarded his 1st kyu brown belt.
We look forward to what 2025 has to offer!
